Vasoactive Intestinal Peptide (VIP) is a 28-amino-acid neuropeptide belonging to the secretin/glucagon peptide family. First isolated from porcine intestine in 1970, it is expressed throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems and is one of the most studied members of its family in the research literature.
Each vial contains 10 mg of lyophilized synthetic VIP, identical in sequence to the human peptide.
Note: VIP is for research use only. Not for human consumption.
VIP Mechanism of Action (Based on Research)
VPAC1 and VPAC2 Receptor Signaling
VIP binds the class B G-protein-coupled receptors VPAC1 and VPAC2, and with lower affinity the PAC1 receptor shared with pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating polypeptide (PACAP). Receptor activation is coupled to adenylate cyclase, and the resulting rise in intracellular cAMP is the signaling event most commonly measured in VIP research.
Smooth Muscle and Vascular Models
The peptide’s name reflects the vascular smooth muscle relaxation first observed in isolated tissue preparations. It remains a standard reference agonist in organ-bath and vascular-ring experiments.
Neuroendocrine and Immune Cell Studies
VIP is expressed by neurons and by several immune cell types, and cell-culture work characterizes its influence on cytokine transcription, circadian-clock gene expression in the suprachiasmatic nucleus, and secretory activity in endocrine tissue.
VIP Research Applications
VIP is used as a reference agonist in receptor pharmacology (VPAC1/VPAC2/PAC1 selectivity studies), in cAMP signaling assays, in circadian-rhythm research, and in non-clinical work on neuro-immune signaling.
